Coding Dental Extractions (D7210 and D7140)
Current Dental Terminology (CDT) code D7210 (extraction, erupted tooth requiring removal of bone and/or sectioning of tooth and including elevation of mucoperiosteal flap if indicated) should only be billed when simple, non-surgical extraction methods are insufficient. D7210 involves cutting of the gingiva and bone, removal of tooth structure, minor smoothing of the socket bone, and closure. MO HealthNet does not cover D7210 for primary teeth.
For simple, non-surgical tooth extractions, CDT code D7140 (extraction, erupted tooth or exposed root [elevation and/or forceps removal]) should be used. D7140 involves the removal of tooth structure, minor smoothing of the socket bone, and closure, as necessary.
The place of service does not determine whether an extraction is surgical or non-surgical. The determination should be based solely on the procedure that is used to extract the teeth.
