November 16, 2023 – You don’t have to stop smoking in one day…Start with day one!

The Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) is excited to invite you to join them in the Great American Smokeout! This is a nationwide event dedicated to helping individuals quit smoking and begin a journey towards a healthier, smoke-free life. The Great American Smokeout is an opportunity for everyone to come together and support those who want to quit any form of tobacco or nicotine. This event is for anyone including adults, youth, professionals, clients and patients. There's a way for everyone to participate!

  1. Commit to Quit: Individuals can use this day as the beginning of their tobacco-free journey and join thousands of others in their goal to quit and experience the health benefits that come with being free of tobacco.
  2. Support a Quitter: Reach out to your friends or family members and offer support and encouragement as they work towards quitting. Being an ally for someone else is empowering for youth and adults, and it can further support their journey towards healthier, safer choices.
  3. Spread the Word: Use this day as an opportunity to raise awareness about the risks of smoking or vaping and the benefits of a tobacco-free life. Encourage people in your life to share their journey or their support on social media with the hashtag #GreatAmericanSmokeout and #YouCanQuitMO. Invite others to join!
  4. Access Resources: Individuals can access Missouri Tobacco Quit Services for free help including nicotine replacement therapy at www.YouCanQuit.org. A new CDC feature article is also available to highlight the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Great American Smokeout® and the many tools available to help people on their quit-smoking journey, including counseling, medications, quitlines, texting, and the quitSTART app. Ask your healthcare providers or your local health department about local resources.
  5. Local Events: Check your local community for events, programs, or initiatives happening on the day of the Great American Smokeout, and research sustainable and long-term support opportunities.
